SCIENCE EXPRESS

KNOWLEDGE IN TRAIN

An interactive exhibition concept onboard a train is setting new standards ...

Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Federal Minister Annette Schavan were on hand in New Delhi on October 30, 2007 to celebrate the launch of one of the most unusual educational projects India had ever seen.

That was the date on which the Science Express, another brainchild of the Max Planck Society, set off on a tour of over 60 Indian cities. The specially conceived 300 meter long train whisks visitors away to ten futuristic multimedia worlds, each of which explains how our lives will be changed by science and technology in decades to come.

The Science Express was conceived not least as a shop window for German research. On behalf of the Max Planck Society, Baker & Harrison translated all of the information panels and much more besides.

On its first tour in 2007 the interactive exhibition on rails welcomed more than 2.2 million visitors in 180 days. So great was the response that the train made a second journey through India in 2008/2009.

The Science Express also toured Germany in 2009, stopping at more than 60 stations. The organizers are in discussions with various countries, especially China, with a view to setting off on new expeditions.
